The Peaks of the Balkans is a hiking trail that covers three countries, Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania. This trail attracs many tourists that are in love with hiking and want to see new places, meet new people and see different cultures. Not only that they seek the beautiful sceneries but also get to know the culture of the people that live in these majestic mountains. Undoubtedly, staying in nature is a wonderful thing, however if you would have to stay for 8 days, without a doubt, that's when the magic kicks in. We were for 8 days in the most beautiful parts of the accursed mountains together with people who later not only became friends with us but also we created a bond that we would never forget. Outdoor Kosova organized a training for future guides in the peaks of the balkans, our intructors were amazing and had professional attributes, they always kept teaching us new things. Our training instructurs were Fatos Katallozi and Mentor Bojku they both did an amazing job and en

Fantastic hike to Black Rock 2,536 m of Brezovica for Kosova's 11th independence jubilee.

Happy hikers celebrating Kosova's 11th Independence anniversary.

It was truly a super Sunday morning here in Prishtina. We as usually wanted to go hiking. We wanted to go to Brezovica and from there to hike up the Black Rock peak which the altitude reaches of 2,536 M high. What's more special about this Sunday morning, it was the 17th of February which means it's the 11th anniversary of Kosova's independence. With this purpose in mind, together with Hiking Njeri we kicked of from Sunny Hill (Bregu i Diellit) from 7 am in the morning and started our great adventure.

After a long way, going through Ferizaj and stopping at Eli-Ab supermarket, we finally headed for the village called Sterpce and eventually arrived at Brezovica around 9 am. In order to make it easier for us to hike up the mountain due of the deep snow we planned to use the ski lift. By doing so we saved 2 hours of walking and arrived at the last stage and waited for all the hikers to re-group. That 17th of February was a wonderful day and on this day happened a miracle. Why? A woman fell from the ski lift 6 meters down and she got up without even a scratch on her body. She was resurrected. Maybe God really loves her. We kept asking her if she was hurt but she insisted that she was fine. In such manner, we waited for everyone and started to hike from the ski lift, we walked for about 15 minutes and stopped to take a break, it was so hot, even though it was winter and lots of snow. From high up there we could see many mountain tops such as the Meadow Peak, Piribreg 2524 M, which they are located in Brezovica and from far away there was the great Luboten 2498 M. In the distance we could see Oshlak 2212 M a huge mountain ridge, alongside with Koxha Ballkan 2043 M in the center and in far right there was Pashallore 2092 M.

Later during our hike the sky was blue as the ocean and the sun was shining, people started to put sun cream over their faces, for me the scent of sun cream reminds me my early days when I used to go to the swimming pool. Nevertheless, we were hiking we had a clear view from there which we could see even Pashtrik Mountain 1988 M alongside with Koretnik Mt 2395 M. Our summit was getting closer with each step. The Sharr mountains are so enormous, because when you have a clear weather you can see many mountain peaks around Macedonia and Kosovo even in Albania, in this case we could see Jezercki Mountains, these peaks are located after Brezovica. During this time Ben was telling us about the hiking schedule and taking lots of pictures. We stopped for some minutes to rest and when I saw Ismet going to Piribreg, he is such a great hiker.

Summit of Black Rock.

One of the best parts of this adventure was that a friend of mine that I haven't seen him for so long, came also to hike. Festim and everyone else here enjoyed this hike to the max. After some hours we approached the final step to the summit, it was a bit windy but there were warm conditions. Following each step and making fun during the ascend we arrived at the peak at 13:05, you could feel just a little breeze of wind, the views were spectacular which let us speechless. We stayed there for about 40 to 50 minutes and took pictures, ate something and started to head back. Genti and some strong hikers after summiting the Black Rock, they decided to go to Piribreg, such as to challenge themselves even further beyond.

After we started to descend from the summit, the terrain was very difficult to walk in because of the ice that was created by the low temperatures days ago, so we had to walk carefully because the majority didn't had crampons with them. During that time a girl was very afraid from the steepness and of the huge snow. I decided to stay near Uresa's side in order to help her to get down, and to give her some courage that she could do it. I am so proud of her because she did it and was very brave and overcame her fears. During that time I stopped because I wanted to give her my power-bank, she wanted to charge her phone but I put it on the ice and started to fall down the abyss. I ran after it yet I couldn't catch it and decided not to go any further as things go, it was not worthy risking my life for it.

We had to do just another little hike in order to descend to our final break, which was the ski lift and return back and safely to Brezovica Ski resort. During my way, I was with Ismet and he was telling me how he did Piribreg twice for that day and Black Rock also, such a powerful man, very inspiring person. In short, everyone was celebrating and having fun with each other. We were so happy because everything went according to plan and which we were able to celebrate the 11th anniversary of Kosova's independence on the highest peak of Brezovica in the Sharr mountains.
